The U.S is expected to impose an additional 7,5% tariff on Chinese goods, citing concerns over excess production capacity ahead of a planned summit between the two countries’ top leaders next month. The move would restore tariffs imposed by President Trump on Chinese goods during his second term to around 20%, a level that Beijing had previously considered consistent with the trade-war truce reached with Washington. President D. Trump’s new tariff measure is also aimed at reviving his trade-protection agenda after the Supreme Court struck down earlier import tariffs on products from China and dozens of other economies, while avoiding an escalation of trade tensions with Beijing beyond the previously agreed threshold. The U.S and China are also negotiating an extension of their trade agreement, which established a one-year tariff truce that is scheduled to expire on 10/11. The U.S Government is expected to announce the results of its investigation into excess production capacity before President D. Trump and President Xi Jinping meet in Washington on 24/9. In July, the U.S Department of Commerce imposed a 12,5% tariff on Chinese goods, citing insufficient efforts by China to address forced labor issues.
The USD rebounded by 0,15% on Monday after the U.S Government announced expanded sanctions on Iran and separate tariffs on Canadian goods. The USD has declined in three of the past four weeks, falling to its lowest level in 3 months.
Interbank USD/VND rebounded to nearly 26.200 on Monday before closing the day at 26.175, as USD demand in the domestic market remained elevated ahead of the 2/9 public holiday. The effective daily ceiling was kept unchanged at 26.880.
