U.S President Donald Trump said he is considering restricting diesel exports in an effort to curb the sharp rise in domestic fuel prices. U.S commercial diesel inventories have fallen by 11% since the start of the war with Iran, while exports increased by 31% from the previous week. This has pushed U.S diesel prices to a record high of 6,5 USD/gallon, compared with 2,78 USD a year ago. The oil industry has opposed the proposed restriction, citing concerns over the potential loss of a significant number of overseas customers while its long-term effectiveness remains uncertain.
U.S business activity expanded at the fastest pace in more than 5 years, supported by strong demand that boosted new orders and employment across both the manufacturing and services sectors. According to data released on Wednesday night, the preliminary S&P Global U.S Composite PMI rose to 58,4 in September, its highest level since July 2021. Strong consumer spending, artificial intelligence-driven business investment, and defense spending have supported optimism among U.S businesses this year. The latest S&P Global data showed that robust demand is offsetting the sharp increase in energy costs and supply-chain disruptions caused by the Iran war. The Services PMI also rose to 58,7 in September, its highest level since 2021. The USD Index climbed sharply by nearly 0,6% last night following the PMI release, reinforcing expectations that the U.S economy could grow strongly in Q3, with GDP projected at +3%, and increasing the likelihood that the FED may deliver another rate hike as early as October, with the probability currently at 70%.
Interbank USD/VND fell to around 25.975 on Wednesday morning before recovering to 26.015 in the afternoon. The sharp appreciation of the USD in global markets is supporting the upward trend in the domestic exchange rate.
