According to data released by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics on Thursday night, the Producer Price Index excluding food and energy rose by 0,2% in August and by 5,4% from the same period last year. This was the strongest increase in 3 months, driven by persistently high energy prices that have shown no signs of easing. Energy, transportation, and warehousing costs rose sharply in August after declining in the previous 2 months. The construction of data centers has also contributed to price pressures this year, with the cost of electronic components and accessories increasing by 3,4%. Brent crude surged to 105 USD/barrel on Thursday as the U.S - Iran conflict continued to escalate. Rising inflation concerns prompted the European Central Bank to raise its policy rate by 0,25% to 2,5% last night, while another rate hike is expected in October.
The market is now focused on the U.S August CPI report due tonight. This will be the final major economic data release ahead of the Federal Reserve’s meeting next week. The probability that FED policymakers will raise interest rates at next week’s meeting has increased to around 70%, while the Central Bank may also consider another rate hike in October. The USD Index rose by nearly 0,3% following the release of U.S PPI data. The 10-year U.S Treasury yield also moved closer to 5%, influenced by sharply higher global oil prices, U.S producer inflation data, and President D. Trump’s newly announced cash-support plan for households, which could widen the fiscal deficit.
Interbank USD/VND recovered to 25.925 by the end of yesterday’s session after falling to around 25.885 earlier in the day. The SBV lowered the central rate by a further VND 3, corresponding to an effective daily ceiling of 26.870 on Thursday.
