The U.S trade deficit widened in August to its highest level in more than a year as the country increased purchases of foreign goods, including crude oil, gold, and semiconductors. This was the highest level since March 2025, when businesses rushed to import goods at the beginning of President Donald Trump’s second term to avoid potential tariffs. The data-center boom has been a major driver of this year’s trade deficit, with total imports of semiconductors, computers, and computer accessories reaching 234 billion USD in the first 8 months of the year. Most electronic products remain exempt from U.S Government tariffs. The U.S goods trade deficit reached around 137 billion USD in August, although it was still approximately 20% lower than the same period last year. U.S exports also increased last month, but at a slower pace than imports. Exports of crude oil and fuel products rose by 3,2 billion USD amid elevated oil prices and continued disruptions in global oil markets caused by the war in Iran.
According to the World Bank, the East Asia and Pacific (EAP) region is expected to grow by 4,5% in 2026, demonstrating resilience in the face of global headwinds. Growth remains uneven across economies and sectors, while the increasing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is creating new opportunities. Across the region, several economies have grown faster than expected in 2026, supported by manufacturing activity and exports of high-technology goods, which have become a key foundation for the global boom in AI-related activities.
Interbank USD/VND traded mainly around 26.000 on Tuesday. The USD Index declined again, helping push the exchange rate lower to close the day at 25.990.
