Market Highlight 05.08.2026

The number of job openings in the U.S, as measured by the JOLTS report, edged lower in June, while hiring increased slightly, indicating that labor demand remained relatively stable heading into the summer. The decline in job openings was mainly driven by sectors such as healthcare, leisure and hospitality, wholesale trade, and business services. Meanwhile, vacancies increased in transportation and warehousing, while Federal Government hiring rose to its highest level since late 2024. Tuesday’s report showed that the U.S labor market remained relatively stable, with layoffs staying limited. Strong consumer spending continued to support businesses’ hiring demand, although some companies remained cautious about expanding their workforce. The July nonfarm payrolls report, scheduled for release this Friday, will provide further details on labor market conditions. Forecasts suggest that the U.S economy may have created 80.000 jobs in July.

The JPY edged lower on Tuesday but retained most of the gains achieved following coordinated intervention by Tokyo and Washington last week. The Japanese currency appreciated by as much as 5% over the past 3 days, reaching a three-month high of 155,20 per USD in the previous session, although it remained well above its 40-year low of 163,99 recorded in July. Global oil prices fell by more than 5% this morning to three-week lows of 79,36 USD/barrel for Brent and 75,77 USD/barrel for WTI, after U.S Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that an agreement with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached as early as Tuesday or Wednesday this week.

Domestically, interbank USD/VND edged lower by VND 10 to 26.270 at the end of yesterday’s session. The effective daily ceiling continued to be raised sharply by a further VND 23 to 26.649.
